The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
