Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
