Lifetime of Income Not Enough for UK Labor Force to Join Most Affluent 10%, Study Reveals

Based on new research, the median earner in the UK would have to work over five decades of income to reach the financial standing of the most affluent 10% nationwide.

Widening Financial Divide Across Decades

The analysis reviewed net worth data including the 2020-22 timeframe and determined that back in 2006-08, it would have required nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to enter the wealthiest decile of the financial hierarchy.

An economic expert part of the study stated: "Economic disparities in Britain are currently so significant that a regular employee accumulating their complete salary throughout their career would remain unable to attain the highest level of the economic scale."

Quantifying the Financial Disparity

The study found that the difference between the wealth of the median citizen and someone in the top 10% was £1m in the pre-crisis period, but had expanded to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by 2020-22.

The economist added: "These gaps are particularly worrying as financial progression in Britain is low – those who commence life well-off tend to stay wealthy, and the opposite holds true."

Comparative Financial Divide

Even with the wealth gap widening in specific figures, the percentage of overall assets in the UK owned by the wealthiest families – termed "comparative financial divide" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s era," per the analysis.

Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK rose substantially from thrice the yearly economic output, to approximately 7.5x.

Contributors of Economic Disparity

Termed "passive" appreciation, via growing real estate costs and adjustments to pension valuations, were the primary factors of the growing financial disparity from 2010 onward, as stated in the analysis.

These appreciations tended to accrue to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – exacerbating the age-based economic gap.

Intergenerational Wealth Disparities

The median economic difference between thirty-somethings and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in actual value, from £135k in pre-financial crisis, to 310 thousand pounds.

Geographic Disparities

Additionally, there were significant regional variations, with the median value of wealth in recent years standing at 290 thousand pounds in south-east England, where housing costs have generally grown substantially, versus £110k in the northeastern region.

Pandemic Period Impact

Amid the health crisis, when numerous employees were supported by the public-funded employment protection, and health crisis restrictions reduced expenditure possibilities, the data shows countless homes were capable of accumulating, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, though. "The typical family in the lowest-income quintile saw their liquid savings rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (2019-20 to 2021-22), broadly the same as the pre-crisis period. On the other hand, the average household in the highest income quintile saw their available funds rise by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
