Donald Trump's System of Retribution and Reward

The ex-president's intense appetite for revenge has rapidly morphed into a methodical system. During the past year, the chief executive's anger and whims have assumed the shape of official policies in a manner comparable to earlier dictatorial systems. Justice department personnel who do not cooperate are promptly dismissed and substituted by supporters. Opposing officials who question him encounter indictment, trial and penalties. Critics have been categorized under presidential memoranda as “unpatriotic”, “against faith communities” and “anti-capitalist”, and menaced with criminal charges as “extremists”.

Government Institutions Restructured

Each case involving legal action of critics and leniency for loyalists exhibits its own unique characteristics. However, despite their individual form, they represent manifestations of what has developed as a calculated method. These events are not coincidental. The administration's purge of DoJ attorneys and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, accompanied by his appointment of supporters in high-level posts, began quickly, soon took on a consistency, and has now been formed into a structure. DoJ and the FBI have been restructured into political agencies under his explicit command to carry out his wishes. Unfairness has been rendered normal. This is the apparatus of revenge.

Administration is preoccupied with penalizing the leader's supposed adversaries than they are with protecting our country's safety.

Inside the Apparatus

The foundation of this system has been revealed in the lawsuit of three previous high-ranking Federal Bureau officials submitted in late summer in the US district court in the capital against top official an administration figure and top lawyer Pam Bondi for unlawful firing in “a campaign of payback against them for what Defendants judged to be a failure to demonstrate proper allegiance”. In the complaint that one official, the former interim leader, details a conversation in which Patel “openly admitted the impropriety of his actions”.

He had sought to defend FBI agents from being terminated, the filing claims. Patel told him that “administration officials” – understood by the official to be the White House and federal prosecutors – had ordered him to dismiss everyone who they identified as having worked on a criminal investigation against the president. The complaint goes on: “He explained that he had to terminate the individuals his leaders told him to fire, because his capacity to hold his own role relied on the removal of the personnel who worked on matters involving the chief executive. Patel commented that there was no option he or him could do to stop these or any other firings, because ‘the agency sought to put the chief in detention and he remembers.’” After Driscoll told the director he was breaking the FBI's own internal rules, Patel reportedly said “he understood that and he was aware the essence of the summary firings were likely illegal”.

Broad Impact

Following the director's reported acknowledgment to him, the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau have been gutted and redirected for his revenge apparatus. Several of the agency's high-ranking agents were terminated or pushed out in the initial period of the government. Approximately 4,500 professional attorneys at the department have agreed to a “early exit scheme”. At least seven DoJ lawyers, including those in the southern district of New York, stepped down in objection over what they viewed as ideological pressure in abandoning the corruption case against the city leader, Eric Adams, in return for his assistance with the administration's federal agency detentions of immigrants. The anti-corruption unit of the department, which handles corruption cases, has been diminished to minimal staff. The equality section has been decimated: seventy percent of its staff has departed. One-third of top officials at the department have left. The unit enforcing conservation statutes has experienced the exit of a majority its supervisors.

Incentives and Penalties

Concerning the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the southern district of New York, the official, stepped down in protest against what she characterized as the “exchange”. The border official, his “immigration leader,” appeared as the implementer with the mayor on television to declare: “If he doesn't come through, I will return in NYC.”. And, a former official, previously the senior DoJ official and a past legal representative, who negotiated the arrangement, was given an judicial position, a possible springboard to the supreme court.

Trump's exemption for crimes committed while in power, awarded by the remarkable judgment of the GOP-led on the highest court, thus preventing his criminal case over the January 6 insurrection and preserving his political viability for the presidential race, is the basis on which he depends to defend his loyalists. With such immunity, he has been liberated to authorize misconduct. The consequence of the supreme court decision permeates his administration and the Republican Party thoroughly. The court matter has spread. Similar to the former president's administration lawyer John Dean remarked about the Watergate
